Alexander Leonard's Layout
by Steven Stern
I had a great opportunity to visit Alexander Leonard's layout in Massachusetts on September 2000. Alex is an active member of the ENE chapter.
Alex's layout is one of the largest operational Marklin layout that I have even seen. It is built in the basement of his home and it takes up the equivalent of 5-6 rooms, if not more. The layout is entirely analog, built with M-track and with catenary throughout. The layout is completely functional with lots of scenery, buildings, trees, and backdrops. There are several stations and hidden staging yards. The controls are all analog, including all of the turnouts. There are several local control stations with multiple transformers.
Please enjoy these pictures of Alex's wonderful layout.

A very nice section of the layout with plenty of trees throughout.

Here's one of several control areas. Each area of the layout has a similar "all analog" control area.

Every nook and cranny of his basement is taken up by this layout. Here you see multiple levels.

One of the passenger stations on the layout.

Industrial area with a great looking backdrop.

Again, multilevel use makes the best use of this area.

This draw bridge raises up to allow entrance onto the layout area.

Extensive use of backdrops makes this layout come alive.

Yet another control area with all-analog switches and transformers.
